140 Little Fish

The fishes flicker, flash, reflect the light.
Diffracted rainbows rise up from their hides
As dappled daylight strikes their fluid flight;
Illuminates these kites beneath the tides.

Their freckled flanks collide, they slip and bend;
A whorling horde compressed into one whole.
Like water poured on water, bodies blend.
No terminus of flesh within this shoal.

Approaching golden shore, the sea’s great force
Is brought to bear, the school is firmly pressed
Along the rising, foaming water’s course,
They ride the roiling wall up to its crest
And tumble till the turgid waters cease
Between the waves, where fish may swim in peace.
