Notebook

Witness the birth of a book; deliver one.
Watch the folded paper grow heavy,
Knit its green, flexible bones together,
Cut the linen cord.
Clothe its frame in blue or black or white,
dress it in flowers, paisleys, stripes;
put a ribbon through its hair.
Give it knowledge and discipline,
long days under a heavy dictionary
so that it may stand straight through its life.

It may only have so many pages,
but every one will be used.
Push it into the world, bound and determined.
Let its white spaces be filled with colour.
